3 Ways To Protect Your Hair From Heat Damage

Updated: Apr 25, 2023

Blow dryers, curling irons, straighteners, wind tunnels, brush dryers- they all have the ability to give your locks that shiny, bouncy, finished look we so desperately desire. The downside? HEAT!

The Culprit Hairdryers that run too hot create a flash drying effect removing moisture from the surface, but did you know they can pull the moisture from the core of your hair, too? Did you know that if your blowdryer isn't offering an even flow of heat it will eventually cause dryness, brittleness, + those pesky little hairs that seem to stand straight up?

How about your beloved flat iron? Uneven heat distribution is once again a main culprit. If you bought your flat iron around the same time you bought your first smart phone phone, ditch it! Technology is the name of the game when it comes to protecting your locks.

When duplicating the blowout + style you adore from the salon at home, be sure to take preventative measures to keep your hair healthy, strong, and breakage-free!

1. Protect the Cuticle! The cuticle layer is the outermost part of the hair strand almost mimicking the scales of a fish. It serves as a protective layer. Its responsible for how your hair looks, feels, how well it holds curl + reflects light. When the cuticle layer is damaged, the cortex (innermost layer) is in jeopardy! Once the cortex is compromised there is no turning back! Sealing the layer with moisturizing treatments, protein treatments, + even filling the hair with keratin treatments is a great way to get those "scales" tight + smooth. Book an Oway Rebuilding Treatment that utilizes infrared light to help the protein-packed conditioner absorb even further. Read our blog about this amazing treatment!

2. Try a Heat Protectant! Sure, heat protecting sprays can be found just about anywhere, but is saving $20 on these drugstore products really worth it? Most of these sprays are filled with plastics, silicones, + even worse, ALCOHOL! Isn't alcohol flammable? You'll end up using more than need, looking like you haven't washed your hair in 10 days, + won't be getting the protection you need, either!

Truth is, anything that acts as a barrier between your hair + the heat source is a good thing. Try your favorite oil, serum, or even mousse! Just be sure to check the ingredients, ask a lot of questions, + buy from a reputable hair care professional.

3. Invest in Styling Tools! Spending $100+ on a single styling tool may seem a bit steep but the benefits + longevity of these tools definitely outweigh the price. We spend a lot of money on haircuts, hair colors + our hair treatments - why would we skimp on a $30 heat tool? Trust me - invest. You won't regret it!
